Turkish street food

Welcome to Otto Turkish Street Food, where the vibrant flavors of Turkey find their home in Charlottesville. Our Story Ali Sevindi and Haldun Turgay, both proud Turkish natives and graduates of esteemed Hospitality Business Schools, embarked on a remarkable journey that led them to the heart of Charlottesville. Their path was guided by an unyielding passion for extraordinary cuisine and a longing for the cherished Turkish street foods of their homeland. Their journey began in 2013 when they set foot in Charlottesville, a place that would become the canvas for their culinary artistry. Ali and Haldun joined the teams of two illustrious local establishments, Clifton Inn and Oakhurst Inn, where they fine-tuned their culinary skills and nurtured their deep appreciation for the art of cooking.

As they progressed in their careers within the world of hospitality, Ali and Haldun's shared vision grew stronger. They aspired to recreate the captivating aromas and flavors of the bustling streets of Turkey and Europe right here in Charlottesville. In 2020, during the challenging times of a global pandemic, Ali and Haldun's dream became a reality. They introduced Charlottesville's very own authentic döner restaurant, Otto Turkish Street Food. The name "Otto" pays tribute to the Ottoman Empire, a symbol of the rich history and cultural diversity that inspired their culinary creations. Our Commitment At Otto Turkish Street Food, we take pride in crafting our döner using the same traditional methods you'd find on the streets of Turkey and throughout Europe. Each bite of our döner reflects the passion, authenticity, and culinary excellence that Ali and Haldun bring to every dish. Whether you savor your döner as a wrap, in a bowl, or encased in fresh bread, we invite you to experience the extraordinary blend of flavors that make our Turkish street food unique.

Share your Otto experience with us on social media! Don't forget to tag our accounts and let us know your favorite döner combination. Fun Fact Here's a fascinating tidbit: Did you know that Germany sells over 2 million döner wraps every day? It's a testament to the universal appeal of this beloved street food. We are thrilled to be a part of introducing this global favorite to Charlottesville. At Otto Turkish Street Food, our mission is driven by our love for Turkish cuisine, our dedication to authenticity, and our commitment to providing you with a dining experience that captures the essence of the streets of Turkey. Join us on this delectable journey and taste the passion that infuses every dish we serve.

What is döner?

Döner is a type of kebab made of seasoned meat that’s stacked in an inverted cone shape and cooked slowly on a vertical rotisserie. As the meat cooks, the outer layers are shaved off for our delicious dishes. Döner was first founded in the 18th-century Ottoman Empire and has inspired similar dishes such as the Arab shawarma, Greek gyros, Canadian donair, and Mexican al pastor.
